Mavericks come up big at provincial tourney A pair of Mississauga boys' basketball teams can lay claim to being the best in the province after winning their respective divisions at the Ontario championships. The Mississauga Monarchs and the Malton Mavericks, competing in Division 1 and Division 8 respectively at the Ontario Basketball Association's Major Bantam tournament held last weekend in London, won their championship in convincing fashion. Vonte Montcrieffe had a strong game, at one point scoring five consecutive three-pointers. The crowd was roaring later in the game when an alley-oop pass from Jordan Grant was slammed home by Andrew Wiggins. In semi-final action, the Monarchs beat the Scarborough Blues 82-67. Montcrieffe had another excellent game, scoring four three-point baskets to capture momentum and build a solid lead. The Monarchs had slipped past the Blues 63-61 a day earlier in preliminary round action. En route to the finals, the Monarchs beat the Mississauga Wolverines 68-48 and Blessed Sacrament 61-50. Wiggins led the team in scoring, averaging almost 30 points per game, with a high of 35 points in the gold-medal match. The rest of the team - Lucas Altomare, Trunell Clarke, Jamie Dillon, Domenic Gennaro, DeAndre Gilroy, Lequan Hylton, Nathaniel Kwofie and Teshawn Smikle - also chipped in on offence and played solid defence. Head coach Earl Montcrieffe and assistant Dwight Hylton prowled the sidelines. Meanwhile, the Mavericks took home the crown after beating Peterborough Power 58-48. In the semi-finals, the Mavericks beat the Sudbury Selects 61-57 for the right to play Peterborough. In the quarters, the Mavericks beat the Durham City Bulldogs 72-53. The Mavericks looked dominant early, finishing 3-0 in preliminary round action with wins against the Kemptville Warriors (67-46), the Penetang Midland Magic (52-43) and the VWAYAA Wildcats (59-46).
